The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of West Virginia has announced it will participate in National Night Out, a community event aimed at building relationships between law enforcement and local residents. The event is scheduled to take place on Tuesday, August 5, 2025, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Orchard Manor in Charleston.

Additional National Night Out events are planned in other locations within the Southern District of West Virginia, including Beckley, Dunbar, Huntington, Parkersburg, and Ravenswood.

Acting United States Attorney Lisa G. Johnston commented on the importance of these events: “National Night Out is a great way to connect with the communities we serve,” said Acting United States Attorney Lisa G. Johnston. “We make our streets safer when we build trust, strengthen relationships, and foster cooperation.”

National Night Out is an annual campaign that encourages partnerships between law enforcement agencies and the communities they serve. The initiative aims to make neighborhoods safer by promoting positive interactions and fostering community spirit. Each year, millions of people participate in National Night Out activities across thousands of communities throughout the United States on the first Tuesday of August.

The program began in 1984 with support from the Bureau of Justice Assistance within the U.S. Department of Justice and is administered by the National Association of Town Watch, a national non-profit organization.

Local law enforcement agencies coordinate National Night Out events with assistance from trained volunteers. Activities may include block parties, cookouts, festivals, parades, safety demonstrations, seminars, youth-focused events, and visits from emergency personnel. The purpose is to bring police officers and neighbors together under positive circumstances and demonstrate unity in keeping communities safe.
