United States Attorney Moore Capito is encouraging residents of West Virginia to participate in the Drug Enforcement Administration’s National Prescription Drug Take Back Day, which will take place on Saturday, April 25, according to an April 22 announcement.
The event aims to help prevent drug abuse and accidental poisonings by offering a safe way for people to dispose of old or unwanted prescription medications. More than three dozen collection sites across the Southern District of West Virginia will be open from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m., where individuals can drop off medications for free and anonymous disposal. Site locations are listed at www.DEATakeBack.com.
“Unused prescription drugs don’t just sit in a cabinet — they become a gateway to abuse, addiction, and tragedy,” Capito said. “Taking a few minutes to dispose of them properly is one of the simplest, most effective steps we can take to protect our families, safeguard our communities, and save lives.”
Law enforcement agencies and partners at collection sites will accept tablets, capsules, patches, and other solid forms of prescription drugs. Liquids such as cough syrup must remain sealed in their original containers with caps tightly secured. Syringes, sharps, and illicit drugs will not be accepted during the event.
This year marks the 30th National Prescription Drug Take Back Day organized by the DEA. Since its inception, more than 20.4 million pounds (10,200 tons) of medication have been collected through these events.
