United States Attorney Moore Capito announced on Apr. 14 the successful conclusion of Operation Spring Sweep, a joint effort with the U.S. Marshals Service and other law enforcement agencies that resulted in 72 felony arrests.
Operation Spring Sweep began on March 9, 2026, led by the U.S. Marshals Southern District of West Virginia Cops United Felony Fugitive Enforcement Division (CUFFED) Task Force in partnership with the West Virginia State Police. The operation focused on finding noncompliant sex offenders, individuals wanted for sex crimes, and violent fugitives. Although it officially ended on April 4, efforts continued as another targeted fugitive was captured in Ohio on Apr. 14.
Capito said, “If we’re serious about the future of West Virginia, there is nothing more important than protecting it – so our children can live, work, and thrive here.” He added that leadership and commitment to public safety are standards for his office and its partners.
During the operation, the West Virginia State Police conducted 222 sex offender compliance checks resulting in 19 arrests for alleged violations related to registration and notification requirements. Among those arrested was Johnathan Matthew Taylor, who was indicted by a federal grand jury on March 17 for allegedly violating the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act (SORNA). Authorities noted that an indictment is only an allegation; all defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
The Southern District of West Virginia has been recognized as a leader in prosecuting SORNA violations since its enactment under the Adam Walsh Child Protection and Safety Act of 2006. SORNA sets national standards for registering sex offenders across jurisdictions where they live or work.
Capito said further: “Operation Spring Sweep shows exactly who we are – West Virginia is leading this country in being tough on crime, especially crimes against the most vulnerable.” He emphasized ongoing efforts to bring violent offenders and sexual predators to justice.
