Matthew L. Harvey was sworn in as the United States Attorney for the Northern District of West Virginia on October 10, 2025. His nomination by President Trump occurred on June 30, 2025, and he was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on October 7, 2025. The oath of office was administered by U.S. District Judge Gina M. Groh.

“I am grateful to President Trump placing his trust in me to fulfill his promise to make our communities safe and support our officers,” U.S. Attorney Harvey said. “I am looking forward to building and strengthening partnerships with law enforcement in the district.”

As U.S. Attorney, Harvey becomes the leading federal law enforcement official for the Northern District of West Virginia, overseeing offices located in Wheeling, Martinsburg, Clarksburg, and Elkins. He manages a staff consisting of 20 attorneys and 27 support personnel.

The office prosecutes federal crimes across 32 counties within the district, represents the United States in civil cases, and is responsible for collecting debts owed to the federal government.

Before this appointment, Harvey served as Jefferson County Prosecuting Attorney for 12 years, concentrating on prosecuting drug-related and violent crimes. He has also worked at a private law firm and held positions as an assistant prosecuting attorney in both Berkeley and Kanawha Counties.

Harvey earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from Bluefield State University and received his Juris Doctorate from Appalachia School of Law.
