A federal jury convicted Charles Frederick Muffley, III, an Augusta, West Virginia resident, on March 26 of trafficking methamphetamine and illegally possessing nine firearms. The verdict followed a three-day trial in Martinsburg, according to an announcement by U.S. Attorney Matthew L. Harvey.
The case highlights the ongoing concerns about drug trafficking and illegal firearm possession in Hampshire County and surrounding areas. Prosecutors said Muffley played a central role in distributing several pounds of high-purity methamphetamine as part of a broader operation.
Evidence presented during the trial showed that the U.S. Postal Inspection Service intercepted a package containing nearly one pound of methamphetamine in September 2024. Investigators traced the package to Muffley, who was found to have split drug shipments with co-conspirators over several months. After authorities searched his home under warrant, they seized methamphetamine, paraphernalia, six digital scales, cash, ammunition, and nine firearms including handguns, rifles, and shotguns. Muffley is barred from owning firearms due to previous felony convictions.
“This conviction reflects the serious danger posed by drug trafficking and illegal firearms possession in our communities,” said U.S. Attorney Matthew L. Harvey. “The defendant not only distributed methamphetamine but also did so while unlawfully possessing firearms. We remain committed to working with our law enforcement partners to hold offenders accountable.”
Muffley faces between 15 years to life for conspiracy charges; up to 30 years for possession with intent due to his prior felony conviction; and up to 15 years for unlawful firearm possession. Sentencing will be determined at a later date by U.S District Judge Gina M. Groh after consideration of sentencing guidelines.
Assistant U.S Attorney Lara Omps-Botteicher prosecuted the case with investigative support from multiple agencies including the Potomac Highlands Drug and Violent Crimes Task Force (a HIDTA-funded initiative), U.S Postal Investigations Service, Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco Firearms and Explosives (ATF), Hampshire County Sheriff’s Department, and Hampshire County Prosecutor’s Office.
This prosecution is part of Operation Take Back America—a nationwide Department of Justice initiative aimed at eliminating cartels and transnational criminal organizations.
