Chisom Okonkwo, a 29-year-old resident of Lawrenceville, Georgia, was sentenced in Clarksburg, West Virginia to seven months in prison for wire fraud. Court documents show that Okonkwo and another individual created an email address mimicking that of an employee at a business in Gilmer County. This led a vendor to transfer over $1 million into a bank account managed by the defendants. More than $600,000 of the stolen money was spent before authorities uncovered the scheme.

Okonkwo has been ordered to pay restitution totaling $610,146.03. The second defendant in the case, Prince Boateng Adjei, age 31 and also from Lawrenceville, is scheduled for sentencing at a later date.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Jarod Douglas represented the government in this matter. The investigation was conducted by the United States Secret Service and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services – Office of Inspector General.

Chief U.S. District Judge Thomas S. Kleeh presided over the proceedings.
