A Martinsburg resident has pleaded guilty to involvement in a drug trafficking conspiracy in Berkeley County, West Virginia. Jwan Martine Smith, 40, admitted to participating in a scheme to possess with intent to distribute and to distribute at least 400 grams of fentanyl.

Court documents show that Smith collaborated with others to sell significant amounts of fentanyl in the region. The case was investigated by the Eastern Panhandle Drug Task Force, which receives funding through the High Intensity Drug Trafficking Areas (HIDTA) program, and by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

Smith could face a minimum sentence of 10 years and up to life in federal prison. The final sentence will be determined by a federal district court judge after considering the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Lara Omps-Botteicher is prosecuting the case for the government. U.S. Magistrate Judge Robert W. Trumble presided over the proceedings.
